With the snow today, I set out to re-shoot the 360 Bridge in Austin, Texas. I had shot it in 2007, but since my shooting style has changed and the snow provided a different ambiance…
I did 3 different variations and processed them all a bit differently so let me know what you like about each one and tell me your favorite! :D I did shoot a little extra left & right I can include as well.
Stem of grass takes refuge in this shell of an old hatchery panel truck (see previous post for frontal view). Started to name this ‘Aeons & Asylum’, but thought that might be a little too deep. However if you see a little age, renewal, apocalyptic, epoch etc., that’s quite alright ;)
What does this mean to you?
Started working on shots from the Balloon Fiesta in Abq and finishing up some old truck pics. Been just going through and getting re-acquainted with shots since the summer. Really like to finish up the lighthouse from Montauk as well….

Ok, after several requests and finally showing in the area I now have the ‘Dallas’ piece :O
The initial name is ‘Dallas Mist’ cause of course it was raining ;) And, like to go with the flow usually to bring out what the area was ‘telling me’.
Shot Monday, October 26, 2009 after attending the Huffhines Art Festival in Richardson, Texas (see event post) in the misty rain.
Latest edition to my ‘Cityscapes’ line which now includes Austin, Houston, Chicago, Denver & Dallas. :)
The edition size for each of my canvas prints is now set at 100 per size with 3-4 sizes available. Therefore there will be maximum of 300-400 each image. Custom pieces and smaller sizes will be added to the closest edition size. I will begin to add the edition size on the front of the canvas prints. Clients with existing pieces may contact me to have me add the print number/edition size signed on the front of the canvas.
Matted prints are numbered irregardless of size but remain open edition.
I debuted my new work ‘Gorilla Falls - Contemplating the Journey’ this month in Colorado .
The head rock of the falls (near the base of the Hanging Lake trail) looks like a gorilla, so named it ‘Gorilla Falls’. The ocean, sky & beach shots were taken at the beginning of my journey at Montauk Point, Long Island New York in May 2009 and the falls in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado near the end in June 2009.
Interpret the scene and the title as you will… :)
My gosh it is high resolution - I had to shoot the falls in 11 segments of 6 exposures each to get everything in. I was crouched straddling part of the falls against the rack wall between me and the trail. Even if I could have pulled back to get everything in one shot, I wouldn’t have cause it would changed the perspective. Yeh, guess I need a wider angle lens - that’d help a bit ;) The Sky (2×3 exposures) the ocean (1×3 exposures) and the beach (1×6 exposures) were taken about a month earlier on my trip at Montauk Point in New York (east end of long island) around the lighthouse.
So whats that - about 81 or more photographic frames and somewhere around 100 megapixel resolution? Had to save in multiple files in multiple stages to get around the 2Gb file limit. Yes takes forever to save - my poor mac ;)
Quite a bit of work to blend everything - especially around the leaf which has gotten comments. Course blend lighting, digital touch-up over seems etc. and more…
Thanks & congratulations to John (near Salida, CO) and Erick (Crested Butte, CO) for acquiring #1 in the matted & canvas editions respectively.
At a show recently someone asked me to create a puzzle of of one of my pieces to ’sell’. Was just toying with the idea and came across a couple sites that will do online puzzles from a picture. So I tried it and thought I’d share one with you :)
Click here for the ‘Chicago Time’ Puzzle ;)
It took me 9:26 to put together at the default settings. Experienced puzzlers may be much quicker. If you try it, let me know what you thought & your time - comment here.
Also if anyone that knows of a provider that will do a more ’sophisticated’ type (or hand made) with varied shape pieces, let me know ;)
Btw, sold #1 of the ‘Chicago Time’ matted print to a nice couple from Houston this weekend!
This is one of my favorite shots. A song plays in my head every time I look at the scene - if I remember the title of the song I may rename the piece. But its really nice ;)
Originally shot a cople time in the afternoon, but went back and caught in perfect light with cool clouds… but I had just taken a jpeg of me in from of another shack and forgot to set back to RAW with multiple exposure & by the time I reset everything that sun had gone behind a cloud. So I waited around for a couple more hours and caught the sun popping out a little each time. So this is a composite of the single frame jpeg with some later multiple exposures :)
I stayed over the rest of the day after taking Lee Ann & Beth to the Airport to try and take some more shots around Chicago, but it just poured rain all day. But on my way to the zoo, I did meet a new friend, Shannon who I had lunch with and perused the neighborhood second-hand shop. On the way back to pick up my rig from the Airport, I was determined to get at least one shot before I left. So I skipped one train and captured this platform shot in the rain. Yeh-yeh, I guess I wimped out and stayed dry this time ;0
Kinda goes with the train tunnel I posted earlier…
Ok, now that I’ve gotten out all my orders from the trip (except a couple waiting on stretcher bars to come in), I’m able to start working on new pieces. :D
This may be the first to be completed - just started working on it a couple hours ago and looks good. Named ‘Chicago Time’ it’s a really special piece to me as it represents time spent with my sister Lee Ann & her partner Beth Akard. Beth actually pointed the clock out to me and I positioned myself to capture the sun in the haze behind the statue.
Welcome to my portfolio guys! ;)
I will always cherish the time spent that weekend with Lee Ann and Beth - especially getting to know Beth a bit. I hope this piece will remind me to take time and enjoy my time with friends & family even when the schedule is hectic. I was able to bring along to a show or visit with each of my family members on the 2 month long trip and that was very important to me :)
When we set out I told Lee Ann - “during the show (Wells Street Arts Festival), I’m in charge - outside of that you set the schedule and can be the Entertainment Director etc. I will just ‘be there, immersed’ not needing to ’seek out’ anything”. Seems to work ;) ….
Epic - looking landscape with light emitting from the flat stone with a deep turquoise stream flowing through. The brush to the right forms a kind of countryside (in the wide version) with a gallery of people looking on and maybe someone working. The ominous ’sky’ also reflects the light as a sort of inverted moonlit ocean.
Actually it is created from a series of shots I took in a cave at Reimer’s Ranch (near Hamilton Pool up a stream bed from the Pedernales River just outside Austin). I added the water and and some some special effects to give the richer colors. The sky is actually the cave ceiling with a little blending magic to produce the colors.
This is a scene I’ve wanted to create something of for a couple of months so I got to work yesterday evening - instead of going to bed early after a relatively non-productive day (don’t I get a break to rest after the long weekend?;)). This is one of those where I spent a good amount of time ’staring’ into the image’ to pick out things that were calling out to me and finding the ‘theme’. What you are seeing here is a culmination of spirituality, experiences and my digital skills over the years - look for more to come :)
For me, it’s an idea bursting into creation - turning the enclosed cave into an entire world, generating attention. Just as an idea emanates from the darkness of our ‘cave’ and fills our minds with thoughts and possibilities.
Please comment on ‘what you see’, what the work ‘means to you’ or just what you feel when gazing into the scene. Also interested to hear if the square or wide version appeals to you more?
- thanks :D
‘Shroom Village’ #1 is based on a shot of mushrooms that sprung up one morning and were pretty much gone by the evening. There were clumps of dark grey & off-white ’shrooms’ and they looked to me like a small ‘village’ from ground view. This is #1 of two shots for a set. Shot with my 3mp coolpix, then filtered and digital painted in photoshop for a ‘painting on black-velvet look’
My Header image is basically taken from my ‘Leaves on the Roof’ work (see below). Just a little bit of Photoshop magic this evening and I have a nice some-what muted ‘pastel-looking’ image. I then added the text and painted a white fade around the border to blend in with the background.
I’m calling it ‘Desert Sea’
Made a ‘print’ of this:
This image was shot on the deck at Mother Egans during the Saturday market in the Spring of 2007. Kathy Sahagian had noticed me slumping a bit an offered to ‘crunch my back’. Aftwards, I looked up and noticed the neat patterns the gathered leaves made on the roof and snapped a couple of shots with my 3 Megapixel Coolpix ;) Of course a little effect work in Photoshop…
Unfortunately, as with most of my shots, this is ‘full resolution’ and even with Genuine Fractals not much I can do to make them into prints… I’ll be stepping up to an 8 or 10 megapixel camera soon! :)
